Police watchdog called in after video captures officers subduing shooting suspect in residential backyard

The SIU is investigating whether injuries believed to have been suffered by the suspect during the arrest fall within standard police practice

Ontario's police watchdog has been called in to investigate the arrest of a suspect following a shooting at a barber shop near Sherbourne and Bloor Streets on Tuesday.

A man in his 20s is in hospital for a gunshot wound to the leg, while one of two suspects was also taken to hospital after his arrest and is being treated for injuries.

Special Investigations Unit spokesperson Jasbir Brar said the SIU is conducting preliminary investigations to determine whether injuries believed to have been suffered by the suspect during the arrest fall within the threshold of standard police practice.

The incident began when shots rang out at Platinum Barber Shop at 597 Sherbourne St., just south of Bloor, around 6:30 p.m. Police found the victim lying on the busy sidewalk in the doorway of the shop and he was transported to hospital 20 minutes later.

Two male suspects fled the scene in a vehicle parked nearby and were pulled over near Yonge Street and Davenport Road shortly after.

Police were able to arrest one suspect, but the other allegedly sped away in his car until he crashed into a pole at Yonge Street and Marlborough Avenue, south of St. Clair Avenue. The suspect was then pursued on foot by police and arrested in a backyard on Gange Avenue.

Video taken by a witness from a nearby window shows the suspect being subdued in the backyard by three police officers.

In the video, the suspect can be seen on the ground, partially hidden by a wooden fence. An officer appears to strike him repeatedly with an object and another officer appears to kick the suspect.

The suspect is later seen in the video being taken away by paramedics on a stretcher.

The witness, who has not been identified, told CTV News he heard the police warn the suspect several times not to resist, but he did.

"The police then suppressed the suspect," said the witness. "And in the process the suspect was injured."
