Mossberg 4x4 338 Win Mag With Muzzle Brake Review

  1. Hither are some pics of my new rifle. Information technology's a 4X4 .388 Winchester Magnum in the archetype wood stalk. I have a Nikon Buckmasters Scope four-14X40 with bullet drop compensation. I'm going to exist using it for hunting acquit, elk, mule deer, and moose. Hopefully I can get a good load worked out for it. Probably going to be using Sierra 225 grain spitzer flat base bullets, those should be adequate for most of those applications.
I only picked it up a few weeks ago and I've shot it once so far, just with manufactory ammo. I like the like shooting fish in a barrel action and the crisp trigger pause. I may tweak the trigger pull, but I have not decided nonetheless. I also may alter my scope set up up, perchance a more solid 1 piece base. The weaver bases are fine for the moment, simply I'k just not sure. I've read that some people think the barrels on these heat up quickly and they shoot inaccurate after they rut up. Like I said I've only taken it to the range once, but it seems the barrel cools off really quickly. Beingness fluted and having the vented stalk, this is what I expected. I similar the muzzle restriction for reducing the recoil. I'm non sure weather I'll keep it on in the field though. I wore ear protection at the range, but I hear that with a muzzle pause you want to article of clothing protection in the field as well. I will not exist doing that, so I may take it off, but I wonder how this will touch on the gun. By that I hateful would I have to sight it in with the brake off?

Now on the the pics

Congratulations on your new Mossberg 4x4 in .338 Win Mag! I have one in .30-06 and love it. I apply ane piece EGW bases on nigh of my rifles and couldn't be happier. I have ane for a 4x4 at my house that may fit yours if you are interested. What sort of ranges do you lot programme to chase with it?
  3. I'chiliad thinking that I'd like to hitting anything out to 500 yards. I've never been out w hunting so I'm non sure how far away you're able to run into and shoot something. Hunting in PA doesn't really allow for anything over 150 yards.
I just ordered bullets today, but I won't be able to shoot the gun again until I get dorsum from Scotland. I know it will exist a while until I get to use the gun in the field so I've got plenty of fourth dimension to experiment with the gun, simply I may be interested in your mount if it fits. I'm just non sure on the durability of the weaver style bases that came with the gun.
  4. My sling came in a while dorsum, simply I've non been able to post pics. At present that I'thou back in the good ol' USA, heres the story. So I got the gun for hunting elk, and I wanted a sling fit for an elk gun. I constitute it via this link...

I was able to find ane a bit cheaper on Amazon and then I went with it!
I call up information technology completes the gun! My big contend was over the garment leather or the suede, merely I'one thousand glad I went with the leather.

Looks slap-up! I wait forward to seeing some pictures of the elk you take downward.
  6. Saweeeeeet. I gotta find me a decent sling likewise. The stores hither merely sell those flimsy, Mickey Mouse nylon ones that run around $xxx.00.
  7. I searched and searched about every gun dealer and sporting goods store in my expanse. They all had crap. I have a leather sling similar to this one on my .243 and I was looking for something similar. I ended up doing a google search for "elk" and "leather sling" This was the merely thing that came upward. I'll try to become a motion-picture show of my .243 sling, although I don't take the gun with me at the moment as a friend is borrowing information technology.
  8. That is a neat looking rifle to say the least. My 308 should exist hither Monday..

Man thats a bang-up lookin rifle, the stock is beautiful, and I'm diggin the sling man!!! Prissy!
  10. Thank you for all the compliments!
I'm looking into getting another mossberg 4x4. I want to use this one for whitetail deer. Correct now I'k debating between .270 win and 7mm rem magazine. Has anyone hither shot a deer with a 7mm magazine? I wonder how much damage such a fast bullet will practice. I think .270 is plenty for hunting whitetail especially since I've been using a .243 for the final few years. Something has me wanting a 7mm though. Whatsoever thoughts?

This gun would also be wood furniture and I'thou hoping for a 2012 model with fluted bolt and no muzzle restriction.

  11. Add 25-06 to the caliber debate. If I got this I would outfit equally a ground-hog/cyote gun with laminate stock and marine coat butt. Perchance a Nikon monarch scope with the highest power. I would go back to using my 30-xxx for deer most likely and fleck my .243. Also thought about .22-250 but 25-06 seems better all around but you pay the price in cost per round.
  12. I've got a 4x4 in .25-06...

I had a couple of issues right out of the box that Mossberg took care of chop-chop & painlessly...

All the same, If I had to do it once again, I'd get the .30-06 instead, based solely on 1 thing and one matter solitary.... the price of .25-06 ammo!!!

I tin can pick up a box of .30-06 ammo on sale for ~$15 a box if I'1000 lucky... The cheapest .25-06 ammo starts @ $xxx and goes upward quicly from there... plus, now you lot tin observe .xxx-06 in weights from 125gr to 180gr at Wal-Mart (if you're desperate)... I went to a Dick's Sporting Goods the other solar day and they didn't even bear .25-06...

I love the .25-06, it's a great shooting caliber, there hasn't been a deer that I've hitting that didn't driblet... merely I tin't go to the range and just "plink" @ $35 cadet a box.....

    Smitty

  13. So, with the buy of a new bow, my burglarize fund is no more. Then information technology'll take to await, and permit the caliber argue continue, and on, and on. If I were to get it today It'd be a .270 win with a Redfield 4-12 telescopic to superlative it off.
  14. Re: My 4X4 .388 Win Mag and my next 4x4

That's the exact rifle I have and information technology gave me fits today trying to get a skilful group at 100yds. I'll try different amo tomorrow. Beloved the muzzle intermission. Kicks less than a 30.06. It was sweet to shoot. Don't worry about taking it off for hunting blood brother. When you shoot at an elk you lot're not going to hear or feel anything. The barrel does cool down fast.

  15. Re: My 4X4 .388 Win Magazine and my side by side 4x4

I've been working on trying to find the correct load for my .338, and the gun is turning out to be very particular. I recollect I'm close, I've been having some success with reloader-19 pulverization, Winchester magnum primers, and both Sierra and hornady bullets. I think I'm shut, but it's hard to say, and I've had various things such as a windy day yesterday that haven't worke in my favor. I want to besides endeavour Sierra .225 grain flat base bullets, merely still can't notice them. The .215 grain sierras and the .225 grain hornadys are boat tail and I wonder if that'south the issue. I think I want to glass bed the rifle: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=3130 and I'm looking for advise on that.

Just posted a piddling feedback in there for ya FWIW...

  17. Re: My 4X4 .388 Win Mag and my next 4x4

I just sent an e-mail to Mossberg. I'thousand looking for a one piece bridge mount for my scope on my .338. Hopefully they tin can provide me with some info on what might fit. I hope this helps my accuracy problem, if non, run into beneath:

Besides, I'm going to try some Hornady 225 grain bullets http://www.hornady.com/store/338-Cal-.338-225-gr-SP-RP/ . I'm hoping these may yield some improve results. Nosler too makes a 225 grain flat base bullet that I might try. If these don't pan out, information technology's on to glass bedding.

    Hey rj,

I use DNZ Game Reaper mounts on my Remy 700s. They're corking 1-piece units and I wouldn't trade them for anything. Looks like they make several models for the long activity 100 ATR / 4x4 models...

DNZ Products: Mossberg 100 LA ATR & 4X4

  19. Re: My 4X4 .388 Win Magazine and my next 4x4

My telephone won't take me to the website so ill have to check it out on my laptop later. Sounds similar a skillful possibility though! I just picked up my hornady interlocks so I take enough of options and things to effort.
